Summer is finally here, and if you’re like me, your first thought is: “How can I bring my dog along for the fun?” Whether it’s a beach day or a mountain hike, summer adventures are better with a furry best friend. But let’s be real—the heat can be tough on them. Here’s how we keep the tail-wagging going while staying safe.

1. Safety First in the Water

I used to think all dogs were natural-born swimmers, but a life vest is a game-changer. It gives them confidence in deeper water and makes it so much easier for you to spot them. Even the strongest swimmers can get tired or hit a current they didn’t expect. A life vest with a sturdy handle on the back is essential—it allows you to quickly lift your pup back onto a boat or paddleboard if they decide to take an unscheduled dip.

2. Beating the Midday Heat

The midday sun is no joke, and dogs can overheat much faster than we do because they can’t sweat like humans. Along with plenty of water, I’ve found that a cooling vest is essential for those afternoon walks. It works by evaporation—you just soak it in cool water, wring it out, and it helps pull heat away from their body.

3. Protecting Those Paws

One thing we often forget is how hot the ground gets. Asphalt, concrete, and even sand can reach temperatures that cause painful burns on paw pads in just seconds. I always use the “five-second rule”—if I can’t keep the back of my hand on the ground for five seconds, it’s definitely too hot for my dog.

4. Timing and Hydration

The best way to enjoy summer is to work around the peak temperatures. We’ve shifted our “big” adventures to the early morning or late evening when the air is crisp and the sun is low. Not only is it safer, but the lighting is also better for all those photos you’ll inevitably take!
